Chiropractic Health and Cardio Exercise

One of things your chiropractor will discuss with you is the importance of exercise in your overall health plan. Your chiropractor may even give you some exercises to perform at home, in between your adjustments. But what about cardio exercises and their importance to your overall health?

People often talk about how they are going to the gym to do some “cardio” work. What does that really mean? Whether they’re running on a treadmill, riding the recumbent bicycle or using an elliptical machine, they’re talking about doing aerobic exercise – otherwise known as cardio because of its profound cardiovascular benefits.

Plain and simple, when you’re doing aerobic exercise, you’re using oxygen to replenish energy stores, which means the heart and lungs are working harder and getting stronger in the process. By comparison, anaerobic exercise (for example, weight training), requires your body to create energy without using oxygen. Here are some of the other benefits of aerobic exercise:

Increases blood supply to muscles and ability to utilize oxygen.

Increases amount of blood pumped (per beat and per minute).

Increases HDL (”good”) cholesterol and lowers triglycerides.

Increases blood supply to muscles.

Reduces resting heart rate.

Reduces resting systolic/diastolic blood pressure.

Reduces high cholesterol and risk of developing high cholesterol.

To achieve the maximum cardiovascular benefit during aerobic activities, you should exercise for at least 20-30 minutes at a time and build to your “target heart rate” – this is a range of beats per minute that represents approximately 60-85 percent of your maximum heart rate. The more time spent exercising within this safe range, the more you stand to gain, cardiovascularly speaking.

Remember to always talk to your chiropractor before beginning any exercise program, particularly if you have any pre-existing heart condition. And be sure to talk with your chiropractor about the importance of cardio exercise.

Common Foods Your Chiropractor May Tell You To Avoid

If you are visiting your chiropractor because of some pain or discomfort in your body, what you had for lunch is probably nowhere near your mind. Your chiropractor though, understands that the foods we consume can very well be adding to your body pains and aches.

You may have heard this before from your chiropractor, but it deserves repeating: Many prepackaged and processed foods contain non-nutritious chemicals and food additives, including one or more of the following three ingredients: refined grains, trans fats and refined sugars. If we remove these three ingredients, we automatically remove many others simply by association.

Dangerous foods can be defined as nutritionally deficient, frequently consumed and advertised to have “health benefits.” The following foods have been noted by your chiropractor because in many cases, they contain refined grains, trans fats and/or refined sugars, and are consumed as daily “staples” by far too many people:

Breakfast Cereals: Most people start their day with some brand of cereal that may advertise numerous health benefits on the front of the box or package. When the list of ingredients is closely examined, you’ll find as many as 32 items. Among these ingredients, usually in the first few listed, are the refined grains, partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and refined sugars.

Margarine and Butter Substitutes: Margarine is partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. This trans fat was advertised heavily for several decades as a healthy alternative to butter. Most of today’s new butter replacements are not much better.

Breads, Bagels, Croissants: Most commercial breads are made with enriched wheat, partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and refined sweeteners such as high-fructose corn syrup. The lengthy list of ingredients includes the isolated synthetic ingredients also found in breakfast cereals.

Salad Dressings: A number of salad dressings contain high-fructose corn syrup and partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. The low-fat dressings are often higher in refined sugar.

Pasta: Pasta comes in many shapes and sizes. It is most often made out of enriched wheat. The vegetable pastas are made out of durum semolina, which is not whole wheat.

What have we learned? All of these foods can contain superior nutrition if they include whole grains, healthy fats and non-refined sugars, but unfortunately, most don’t. Truly superior nutrition requires returning to a diet that excludes prepackaged foods and convenience or fast foods. It requires taking the time to read through a list of ingredients to know what you are eating, and choosing whole foods. Talk to your chiropractor for more information.

Your Chiropractor, Pain and Posture

If you don’t have good posture, what do you have? Your chiropractor will probably talk to you about the importance of posture. So, what’s the big deal? This post will address some of the things your chiropractor will address when talking to you about your posture.

Poor posture can lead to a variety of health problems over time, and yet too many people have bad postural habits. Let’s focus for just a moment on the characteristic aspect of posture, the basic form we take while standing or walking. The human body is designed to stand with the eyes level with the horizontal plane of the Earth. Viewed from the front, the shoulders and hips are level and the spine is vertical. From the side view, the ear is over the shoulder, the shoulder is over the hip and the hip is over the knee, which is over the ankle.

The most common signs of postural stress are one ear being higher than the other and unlevel shoulders or hips. You can also detect postural stress from the side if the ear looks as if it has moved forward of the tip of the shoulder or if the hips appear to have moved forward.

The foundation of posture is actually the feet. It is very common for there to be slight differences in the arches of the feet, which create a slight imbalance. This imbalance can cause a chain reaction all the way up the spine, affecting postural balance. One sign of foot imbalances is when one foot flares out more than the other. Both feet should point forward with only the slightest outward flare when you walk.

Here are a few things you can do to ensure ideal posture and correct any postural problems you may be experiencing:

Get checked – If your posture is breaking down as a result of improper foot balance, it is important to have your feet examined to determine if a custom-made, flexible shoe orthotic will be beneficial. Orthotics create a solid foundation for your pelvis and spine by limiting excessive motion in the feet.

Improve flexibility – This is important because postural stress causes some muscles to work harder than others, creating tension and stiffness. Mirror image exercises are stretching and strengthening exercises designed to restore muscle balance by stretching in the direction away from the postural imbalance. If you are looking in a mirror and one shoulder is higher than the other, you will want to stretch and strengthen in the direction that makes the shoulders level. The same concept works for the lower back.

Work with your chiropractor – Be sure to work closely with your chiropractor in developing a plan of action, and then check your progress with a postural analysis. It is important to remember that the body works best when it is in balance, so that should be the goal of all of your stretching and strengthening exercises.

Are you a parent who cares about the well being of your child? Of course, you are.   No parent wants to see their children in pain, but it does happen from time to time.  Children occasionally get headaches, suffer from allergies, get earaches, and have back pain.  Basically, the list is endless. As a parent, you know that children are like magnets to injuries, pain, and illness.  Although most are minor, care should be sought, but where should you turn?  Instead of heading to your child’s primary care physician, head to a local chiropractor.  Why?

Once you have completed your chiropractic website, you will need to ensure that it is indexed by Google as quickly as possible.

There are a couple of methods that you can use to ensure your chiropractic website is indexed.

#1. Wait and see. Sooner or later your site will probably be crawled by the Google Bots. Or not. If left alone, this could take weeks or even months to happen.

#2. Take Action. Any good website designer will work with you to ensure that your site will be seen. When you take action to ensure that your chiropractic website is seen, it should be indexed within 2 days or less.

Want to use your chiropractic website to the fullest? Let’s begin with some facts.

Most of your patients are just like me, busy. Sometimes so busy, running around with tons on their personal To Do list that their Chiro care falls by the wayside. In some cases, it falls by the wayside for so long that they either forget about it altogether or, more likely, they become uncomfortable calling your office to schedule a new appointment, embarrassed that it’s been so long.

#1. Never be dependent on just one or two forms of Marketing. Even a top notch website and internet marketing plan can not stand alone. The key is to create a mix that works. This mix should combine some or all of the following, Internet Marketing, EMarketing, Direct Mail, Telephone Marketing, Advertising, Referrals, Direct Sales, Guarantees, Pricing Strategies, Up-Selling and Cross-Selling, Special Events, PR.

As you delve into some of these other means of marketing, remember that you can not be all things to everyone. Value your time, focus on your patients and building relationships and ALWAYS delegate whenever possible!

Chiropractic Website - Your Chirpractic Website Needs To Function Well

Ok …from the title of this post, you may be thinking, “Tell me something I didn’t know”. But here’s the reality, I’ve seen many a Chiropractic Website that can not satisfy this basic need.

Your chiropractic website needs to be easy to use.

I have seen some chiropractic websites that were so muddied up and difficult to navigate, that a first time user would probably become frustrated and leave within the first five or six seconds.

And that’s how long you have to capture that visitor’s attention.

Five or six seconds.

If you can’t show your chiropractic website visitor that you have what they need, you’ve just blown a chance at getting another life long patient.

You only have one time to make a first impression.

Whether that is in your office, at your daughter’s soccer game or on your chiropractic website.

Chiropractic Website Features - The Testimony

When new patients are searching for local chiropractors, they more often than not, turn to Google.

Not the Yellow Pages.

Hopefully, your chiropractic website is there on the 1st or 2nd page of Google and they click on the link leading them to your site.

Now that that prospective new patient is on your chiropractic website, what do they see? Do they see a chiropractic website that looks like all the others or does yours stand out?

One of the easiest ways to get that prospective patient to call or come in to your office is to answer their questions, BEFORE they ask them.

Question #1 for many people is, “How good is he/she?” Or, phrased another way, “Is this particular chiropractor really going to be able to help me?”

When designing your chiropractic website, you want to make sure that you answer this question quickly. And it’s easy to do - with testimonials.

On your chiropractic website home page or even as a link to another page, you need to share testimonies from your current patients. Let them sing your praises. Let them tell your chiropractic website visitor how much better they feel now, after coming under your care.

Let the flood gates open with your patient testimonials, the more the merrier.

And if possible, with your patient’s consent of course, use their pictures next to their testimonials. A smiling patient who feels better now can be your best form of advertising,
